Alex May and Anna Dumitriu are showing The Bio-archeology of Yeast as part of Ferment: Working with Life. Without Air. at Galerie Neukölln, Berlin, from 22 May to 22 August 2026.
The exhibition brings together work by Alex May and Anna Dumitriu, Eleonora Bertolotti, Joshua Pablo Rosenstock, and Janina Schwiemann, with a vernissage on Friday 22 May at 8pm. Its subtitle, Working with Life. Without Air., frames a set of artistic positions concerned with living systems, technology, memory, perception, and the changing conditions under which life is shaped, stored, simulated, or transformed.
The exhibition text describes a world in which organisms are programmed, memories stored, bodies measured, microbes cultivated, food staged, and perception technically extended. Rather than treating the living as a romantic opposite to technology, the exhibition presents it as unstable, porous, and made: something that moves between laboratory and kitchen, archive and body, play and control.
The Bio-archeology of Yeast forms part of Alex May and Anna Dumitriu’s wider Fermenting Futures project, which explores yeast biotechnology through cultural, historical, and aesthetic perspectives. Within the exhibition, the work connects fermentation, biological memory, and the material consequences of living processes to wider questions about how life is worked with, altered, and understood.
