AI Hokusai Art+AI Residency

Alex May has been selected as the UK artist for the AI Hokusai Art+AI Residency, an international program exploring the intersection of art and artificial intelligence. Running from October 2024 to January 2025, the residency brings together a diverse group of artists to collaborate, experiment, and create using cutting-edge AI tools.

The residency, hosted by the AI Hokusai project, draws inspiration from the legacy of Hokusai, the renowned Japanese master artist whose innovative approach to art and education continues to influence creatives worldwide.

Participating artists, including representatives from Japan, Argentina, France, and Spain, will take part in workshops led by experts and engage in hands-on experimentation with AI technologies. Each artist will create work reflecting their unique perspective, culminating in a virtual exhibition in January 2025.

Reflecting on the opportunity, Alex May said:

I’m delighted to have been selected to take part in this unique project. Looking at cutting edge contemporary use of AI in art through the lens of the Japanese master artist Hokusai grounds the discussion into a fine art context, and asks: how do these systems that we have made see us? Do they see our essence, as Hokusai strived for, or is it a dark distorted mirror, inventing stories of myth and monsters?

This residency provides an exciting opportunity to explore the transformative potential of AI in contemporary art and contributes to ongoing discussions about the role of technology in creative practice.
