Alex May took part in the Indo-European Residency Inaugural Programme on 8 October 2021, marking the opening of the fourth edition of the Indo-European Residency Project Kolkata 2021.

The evening introduced the selected artists from the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, and India, alongside the project’s partners and creative consultant. Within that shared opening context, May presented his practice, outlined the interests he would bring into the residency, and situated his approach in relation to the wider question of what a digital residency could make possible when travel and direct contact were still constrained.

The talk now reads as an early public frame for A Kolkata, which would emerge from the residency later that year. It matters less as a standalone lecture than as the point where the project’s international structure, remote format, and emphasis on exchange first became visible, setting up the concerns with place, mediation, and distance that the finished work would carry forward.
