ArchaeaBot at CCCB Barcelona
· exhibition
ArchaeaBot was shown in AI: Artificial Intelligence at CCCB Barcelona, placing the work within a major exhibition on artificial intelligence and culture.
Alex May and Anna Dumitriu showed ArchaeaBot in AI: Artificial Intelligence at CCCB Barcelona, where the exhibition ran from 18 October 2023 to 17 March 2024.
This presentation placed the work inside a broader international conversation about artificial intelligence, culture, and public imagination. ArchaeaBot brought a different register to that discussion: not AI as seamless utility, but AI entangled with ancient microbial life, ecological pressure, and speculative survival. That tension keeps the work close to May’s wider practice, where technology is used to ask what we keep, what we lose, and what we think is real.
The exhibition also prompted wider press response beyond standard listings. In an opinion column for El Nacional, David Gonzalez used ArchaeaBot as one of the works through which to reflect on AI, technological power, and posthuman futures. Although the article is not primarily about May’s practice, it shows how the work could operate within a broader public debate around artificial intelligence and social control.
