Since 2015, a visitor to the Eden Project, a botanical garden in Cornwall, UK, may have come across Anna Dumitriu and Alex May’s interactive installation, The Human Super-Organism (pictured on the cover of this special issue). Pressing their hand against a screen laid flat before them, bursts of color – green, yellow, orange, and black – would spread from the moment of contact; colonies of virtual bacteria blooming from the hand on which they lived. The work is a part of Dumitriu and May’s Super-Organism series, an effort to visualize the human microbiome: technology and art united to render the unseen seen, to draw the microscopic to the human scale, and compress the speeds at which life proceeds.
