Fermenting Futures exhibition at Künstlerhaus Vienna

Fermenting Futures is being exhibited at Künstlerhaus Vienna from 3rd to 22nd March 2022.

The Fermenting Futures project (2022) by Alex May and Anna Dumitriu explores the significance of yeast biotechnology from a cultural and aesthetic perspective, engaging audiences in the history and future of this important, but under-recognised, field. The work has been created in collaboration with Professor Diethard Mattanovich, Professor Michael Sauer, Dr. Özge Ata and Dr. Martin Altvater at the Institute of Microbiology and Microbial Biotechnology of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna, Austria.

Media Coverage

The exhibition is reminiscent of an alchemist’s kitchen, in which miraculous processes of transformation take place…Rarely do artistic and scientific methods come together as congenially as they do in this exhibition, which also aims to create an awareness for new solutions. Turning too much carbon dioxide into into biodegradable plastic – that’s the kind of alchemy – alchemy as we would like it to be.
