Welcome to the exhibition opening on Thursday, October 7 from 17-19h!

High Altitude Bioprospecting (HAB) is a long term project involving scientists and artists in a quest to explore extreme environments, particularly the stratosphere and detect and capture microorganisms that may live or survive there. Their Atmospheric Encounters exhibition draws on the expertise of a family of HAB collaborators who come from the worlds of science, engineering, art and maths.

HAB’s work investigates the invisible microbial life in the air, understood as both a co-existing benign presence or as a potential threat, as has been found in recent times of the Coronavirus pandemic. The exhibited works are heavily informed by Bioart Society’s 2019 residency ‘Field_Notes – The Heavens’, of which the HAB team were involved, read more here.

The HAB team have been working together since 2008 and have exhibited their work at Birmingham Open Media (BOM), where Atmospheric Encounters was on view earlier this year, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. They have published a photographic book, and you can learn more about their work at https://h-a-b.net/.

8.10.–20.11.2021
SOLU-tila, Luotsikatu 13, Helsinki
Avoinna ke–la klo 12–16 tai sopimuksesta.

Tervetuloa näyttelyn avajaisiin torstaina 7.10. klo 17–19!

High Altitude Bioprospecting (HAB) on pitkäaikainen, monialainen projekti, jonka puitteissa joukko tutkijoita ja taiteilijoita tarkastelee äärimmäisiä ympäristöjä – erityisesti stratosfääriä –  havainnoiden ja pyydystäen mikro-organismeja, jotka saattavat elää ja selviytyä siellä. Atmospheric Encounters -näyttely esittelee uusia teoksia ryhmän jäseniltä, jotka toimivat tieteen, tekniikan, taiteen ja matematiikan aloilla.

HAB-ryhmän työ tutkii ihmisilmälle näkymättömien, ilmassa elävien mikrobien elämää, jota voi tarkastella sekä hyväntahtoisen kanssaelon että potentiaalisen uhan näkökulmasta, kuten koronaviruspandemia on osoittanut. Näyttelyn töihin on vaikuttanut voimakkaasti Biotaiteen seuran vuonna 2019 järjestämä Field_Notes – The Heavens -kenttätyöpaja, johon HAB-ryhmä osallistui (lue lisää täällä).

Hän työskentelee taiteellis-tieteellisessä Rotting Sounds -projektissa Wienin University of Applied Arts -korkeakoulussa. Hän on myös friendly.organisms-taiteilijakollektiivin jäsen. https://lfsaw.de

Anna Dumitriu on palkittu ja kansainvälisesti tunnustettu taiteilija, joka työskentelee biotaiteen, kuvanveiston, installaation ja digitaalisen median parissa tutkiakseen suhdettamme tartuntatauteihin, synteettiseen biologiaan ja robotiikkaan. annadumitriu.co.uk

Melissa Grant on biokemisti, jota kiehtoo tieteidenvälisyys.

@alexmayarts

Oliver de Peyer on laboratioautomaation asiantuntija, jota kiehtovat astrobiologia ja tieteidenvälinen tutkimus. De Peyer uskoo lujasti siihen, että tiede voi ylittää laboratorion rajat – itse asiassa monet parhaista tieteentekijöistä eivät välttämättä edes työskentele ‘tieteen’ parissa! @crucible2008

Heidi Pietarinen toimii tekstiilialan professorina Lapin yliopiston taiteiden tiedekunnassa. Hän on väitellyt taiteen tohtoriksi aiheenaan tekstiilisuunnittelu. Pietarista kiinnostavat tekstiilien kertomat tarinat sekä niiden kulttuuriset vaikutteet.
